Health & Safety Officer

Introduction

A leading South African manufacturer and marketer of Traditional Sorghum Beer and alcoholic beverages  based in Isithebe is looking for a Health and Safety Officer.

To coordinate health and safety systems within the company including but not limited to identifying hazards, assessing risks to health and safety, implement appropriate safety controls and to provide advice about accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees. Investigate accidents, incidents, non-conformances, causes of ill-health and complaints.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Proactive management of safety laws and regulations within the brewery and depots
• Inspections of brewery and depots to ensure adherence with safety laws and regulations
• Examine ways to improve health and safety standards
• Ensure that each market has comprehensive Baseline Risk Assessment as well as advising the markets on implementing appropriate controls
• Calibrate the sites and location on the Safe Systems of Work
• Negotiate with managers and employees regarding provision of a safe working environment
• Assist in the development of health and safety programmes and strategies
• Compile and review risk assessments, safe working procedures and method statements
• Communicate risk assessments to the work force
• Conduct safety inspections and report deviations to management
• Maintain good housekeeping principles
• Coordinate health and Safety related training of employees
• Ensure all health & safety reps conduct monthly H&S inspections of their work areas.
• Ensure all registers and checklists are updated.
• Assist in appointment of safety representatives.
• Evaluate incident forms, surveys and audits to establish root causes and together with Supervisors and Managers concerned, formulate a plan of action to correct non-compliant behaviour or conditions
• Liaise with on-site contractors to ensure compliance with company safety regulations and adherence to safety standards, including basic safety induction training
• Identify unsafe acts, conditions, and hazards, investigate root causes and identify corrective and preventative actions and report to management.
• Co-ordinate evacuation exercises to ensure that all staff become familiar with evacuation procedures.
• Review and update Emergency Procedures as and when necessary
• Implementation of ISO 45001 standard in coordination with SHE Manager
• Provision of all monthly reports as required by Senior Management
• Monthly HSE reports for supply and demand
• Inventory control, maintenance and supply of fire extinguishers and first aid kits to brewery and depots
• Assist with the formulation of emergency/contingency plans for the following:
  ▪ Natural disaster
  ▪ Industrial action
  ▪ Political unrest
  ▪ Fire
  ▪ Explosions
  ▪ Bomb threats

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Matric
• National Diploma/degree in Health & Safety Management
• SAMTRAC or NEBOSH
• NOSA
• HIRA
• ISO 14001, 22000, 45001, 50001 auditor.
• HACCP
• Total Quality Management Certificate (Advantageous) & ISO 9001
• 5 years of work experience in a similar role
• FMCG Manufacturing experience
• SAP experience

Skills and Knowledge

• Sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
• Knowledge of Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA)
• Government and Sectoral requirements
• Knowledge of HACCP, FSSC 22000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 Management Systems would be an advantage
• Comprehensive knowledge of Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis Principles
• Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule, and produce accurate results
• Work independently, exercising effective judgment and initiative
• Systematic, hands-on and innovative approaches to all facets of his/her work
• Be goal orientated, stable, show integrity and be able to make decisions under pressure
• Must have a pro-active problem-solving approach and initiate corrective action to eliminate deviations
